HOMAGE TO PEASANT LEADER SADHU SINGH TAKHTUPURA
Sadhu Singh Takhtupura, Organizing Secretary of Bharti Kisan Union Ekta (Ugrahan), a relentless fighter for the cause of peasants, was brutally murdered on February 16, 2010, at village Bhindi Saidan in Amritsar District. He was organizing the ABADKARS, to protect the lands that they have brought under tilling with their hard labour. On the other hand a gang up of ruling class politicians, corrupt police officials, and mafia groups were hell bent upon depriving the peasants of their due rights. BKU Ekta Ugrahan was to organise a protest dharna on February 17, 2010 against the custodial death of a farmer and Mr. Takhtupura along with other leaders of the BKU was mobilising the people for this dharna. He was ambushed by a large number of goondas and killed on the spot. His four companions were severely injured.

On February 17, 2010, hundreds of peasants gathered at Civil Hospital Amritsar, when postmortem of Mr. Takhtupura was being conducted there. They held a massive protest demonstration in the city and thereafter took his body in a long caravan to his native village about 200 Kms away. As Sh. Takhtupura has already donated his body to a medical college for research, it will be handed over to the authorities of the said college on February 18, 2010 (in lieu of the cremation).

Here are some of the photographs of the protest demonstration held at Amritsar:
